Northern Lights (His Dark Materials Trilogy)

We hope you are having a fun day so far, and that you recognise this book! It is a book we both love from our teens and something that connected us before we knew each other.
It was the first large trilogy that Barry ever finished (he had attempted Lord of the Rings a few times before with no luck), and the first time that he felt he wasn’t being talked down to; there were no easy answers and no story-book endings. What was there was thought-provoking and visceral. Barry re-read this recently and it is as captivating at 30 as it was at 13.
Becca’s favourite character from the book was Iorek, the polar bear king! (Becca has a fur coat named after Iorek, and a bit of an obsession with polar bears). These books were so powerful, and Becca remembers being totally enthralled by them during her teens.
